Paul Tudor Jones II is one of the most successful macro traders in history. He is best known for predicting and profiting from the 1987 stock market crash, tripling his money while the market collapsed. His hedge fund, Tudor Investment Corp., has been one of the most consistently profitable funds for over four decades.

Early Career

After graduating from the University of Virginia, Jones worked as a clerk on the trading floor before becoming a commodities broker. He founded Tudor Investment Corp. in 1980 at age 26.

The 1987 Crash

Jones' most famous call was predicting Black Monday in 1987. Using technical analysis and pattern recognition, he identified similarities to the 1929 crash and positioned accordingly. While the Dow Jones fell 22% in a single day, Jones' fund reportedly made 62% that month alone.

Jones is known for his:

  • Risk Management: Never risking more than 1% on any trade
  • Technical Analysis: Using charts to time entries and exits
  • Macro Approach: Trading based on global economic themes
  • Psychological Discipline: Cutting losses quickly and letting winners run
